Once you start dancing, sooner or later you will face this question: how should I choose my first pair of dance shoes!? Here we will review some basic, yet key factors to consider when buying your first pair of dance shoes!

High heels

There is a wide array of heels height to choose, from essentially flats to 4 inches (ca 10 cm)! However, the heel height for Latin and ballroom dance shoes for women typically ranges from 1.5 to 3 inches (ca. 3.8 to 7.6 cm) and for men from 1 to 1.5 inches (ca 2.5 to 3.8 cm). If you are not used to high heels it is recommended to start low. Regarding the heels itself, it comes in few types, most often: slim or flare. Flare gives you more security and stability as the bottom of the heel has a bigger surface area compared to slim heel. This is just a matter of preference.

Last but not least, you always have an option to put a cover on you heels. These tiny plastic caps will protect your heels from damage and often give you better adhesion to the floor.

Good dancefloors are typically smooth and polished and hence dance shoes are designed to provide you the right balance between slip and grip. Soles of the dance shoes are typically made of suede. As this kind of material can get slippery over time, it is a good practice to use a special metal wire brush to provide better friction on the floor. Leather soles are also available although less common.

Typically, dance shoes are to be used only indoors on the dancefloor. If you use them outdoors you can be sure you will say ‘bye bye’ to your shoes very soon. There are some brands, though, that offer dance shoes with sole that can be used outdoors (for example Burju).

Good fit

This one is the most intuitive. Of course dance shoes have to fit your feet very well. Any kind of excessive tightness or uncomfortable rubbing is a ‘no go’ for the shoes. After all, you will spend long nights on the dancefloor in those shoes and the last thing you want to experience is to give up a dance because of the pain...

The price of dance shoes can be anything from 50 to 300 EUR. It all depends on the brand, the design and materials. You can get a decent quality of shoes for 70-90 EUR. If you are keen on fancy design and decoration with shiny stones you are likely to pay more.

Once you pick your perfect dance shoes you defintely want it to accompany you through as many classes and parties as possible. Dance shoes are rather delicate and need special care to last long. No 1 enemy is the moisture - make sure you allow your shoes to dry properly after you use it. This way you will prevent development of unpleasant odour and any deformation of your shoes. It is also important to remember not to use dance shoes outdoors unless you have a pair with special sole. Classical suede or leather soles will easily get damaged on a rough, wet or dirty ground!
